SoCo – South Congress – retail district is one of Austin’s most eclectic and lively restaurant, retail, and hotel areas. New condominium projects are popping up. Neighborhoods include Travis Heights, Bouldin Creek, Barton Hills, Barton Heights, Zilker Park, Inwood Hills, Saddlewood Estates, Oak Plantations, Buckingham Estates, Beaconridge, Texas Oaks, Shiloh, Deer Park, Maple Run, Waterloo, Sendera, Palomino Park, Cherry Creek, Bauerle Ranch, Western Trails, Pleasant Hill, and Sunset Valley. Housing styles include historic homes, bungalows, ranch, and two-story styles and new housing subdivisions. Stacey Pool is located in Travis Heights. “First Thursday” of each month turns South Congress Avenue into a festive area with shops open at night, entertainment in the street, food, and more. Residents’ cars are sometimes seen displaying bumper stickers that read “78704—more than a zip code, a way of life.” “Laid back,” eclectic, and trendy are words that describe this area. The Art Car parade happens here, too! Congress Avenue Bridge, recently named for the late former governor Ann Richards not only connects North and South Austin through the city’s center but is also home to more than a million Mexican Freetail bats. A top summer happening is to stand adjacent to the bridge and watch the bats take to the air at dusk. St Edwards University, a private Catholic university, is located here and so is South Austin Medical Center.
